Present tense conjugation

Twenty-seven questions on the present tense across all persons: prefix and ending, the look-alike forms, and the verbs the teacher conjugates on the test. One try per question; the explanation opens after you answer.

Material: lesson 4, section 5 Verbs from lessons 2–4

1 · Pronoun → form of يَفْعَلُ (test p. 28)

1. أَنْتِ …
One woman addressed: تَـ … ـِينَ. تَفْعَلْنَ is a group of women (أَنْتُنَّ).
2. نَحْنُ …
We → نَـ, the same ن as in نَحْنُ and ـنَا. No ending.
3. هُمْ …
They (men): prefix يَـ + ending ـُونَ. With تَـ it is “you (men)”.
4. أَنْتُنَّ …
You (group of women): تَـ + ـْنَ, with sukūn on the ل. يَفْعَلْنَ is “they (women)”.
5. هُمَا m …
Two men: يَـ + ـَانِ. Two women take تَفْعَلَانِ.
6. هِيَ …
“She” takes تَـ and no ending — the same form as “you (m.)”. تَفْعَلِينَ is only “you (one woman)”.
7. أَنْتُمْ …
All seven “you” forms start with تَـ; a group of men adds ـُونَ.

2 · Form → person

8. يَفْعَلْنَ goes with …
يَـ = they, ـْنَ = group of women → هُنَّ.
9. تَفْعَلَانِ — which pronoun does not go with it?
تَفْعَلَانِ covers three pronouns: you two (m. and f.) and they two (f.). Two men “they” take يَفْعَلَانِ. On the test page it appears only once on the right and يَفْعَلَانِ twice — a misprint; the book (p. 34) is right.
10. تَفْعَلُ — which two pronouns share it?
“You (m.)” and “she” are identical — context decides. Lesson 3: تَعْمَلُ هُنَا فِي المَدْرَسَةِ = she works here at the school.
11. Which ending marks a group of women?
ـُونَ group of men · ـَانِ two · ـْنَ group of women · ـِينَ you (one woman).
12. Which prefix means “we”?
أَ I · نَ we · تَ you, she · يَ he, they.

3 · يَدْرُسُ — to study (test pp. 29, 33)

13. I study
أَـ for “I”, and the ḍamma inside stays in every person: يَدْرُسُ, not يَدْرَسُ.
14. they study group of women
يَـ + ـْنَ, and the س takes sukūn — يَدْرُسْنَ, not يَدْرُسُنَ.
15. you two study
“You” → تَـ, two → ـَانِ.
16. أَنْتِ ___ اللُّغَةَ العَرَبِيَّةَ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ
Test p. 33: you (f.) study the Arabic language every day → تَدْرُسِينَ.

4 · يَجْلِسُ، يَدْفَعُ، يَسْتَأْجِرُ (test pp. 30–31, 33)

17. we rent
Fatḥa on the prefix, like the book's يَسْتَأْجِرُ; “we” has no ending.
18. they sit group of men
Keep the kasra of يَجْلِسُ inside; يَـ + ـُونَ.
19. you pay one woman
تَـ … ـِينَ, like تَفْعَلِينَ.
20. هُمَا ___ فِي غُرْفَةِ الجُلُوسِ
Test p. 33: they two sit in the living room → dual يَجْلِسَانِ.
21. He pays the rent every month. — ___ الإِيجَارَ كُلَّ شَهْرٍ
“He” → يَـ, no ending — the form the book lists (test p. 30).
22. We sit in the living room. — ___ فِي غُرْفَةِ الجُلُوسِ
“We” → نَـ (test p. 30).

5 · Verbs of lessons 3–4 in sentences

23. أَيْنَ تَعْمَلُ وَالِدَتُكِ؟ — ___ هُنَا فِي المَدْرَسَةِ (she works)
The mother is “she” → تَعْمَلُ (lesson 3 dialogue).
24. Where do you live? asking a woman — أَيْنَ ___؟
Lesson 3, expressions (p. 24): أَيْنَ تَعِيشِينَ؟ — answer نَعِيشُ فِي … we live in …
25. we want
يُرِيدُ has ḍamma on its prefix, and it keeps it in every person: أُرِيدُ، نُرِيدُ، تُرِيدُ. Same with يُمْكِنُ.
26. My son and my daughter go with me. — اِبْنِي وَبِنْتِي ___ مَعِي
Two people → dual. One man plus one woman takes the masculine dual يَذْهَبَانِ (compare lesson 3: وَالِدِي وَوَالِدَتِي طَبِيبَانِ).
27. I will be there, God willing. — ___ هُنَاكَ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ
سَـ + the present of يَكُونُ for “I”: سَأَكُونُ (lesson 4 dialogue). The prefix still names the person.
